Martin Mannig Solo Exhibition [ Mitternachtsbilder (Midnight Picture) ]

NANZUKA UNDERGROUND is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of new works by Martin Mannig, an emerging German painter.
Mannig was born in Freiberg in 1974. He attended the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden (HfBK, Dresden University of Visual Arts) between 1999 and 2004, and completed his Master’s degree under the tutorage of Professor Ralf Kerbach, also an acclaimed artist. Taking his inspiration from a variety of sources such as traditional German satire and contemporary subculture, his paintings explore the vibrancy and flexibility of the medium. Their witty and friendly veneer conceals the artist’s examination of the dark side of history and it’s raison d'être. The characteristic layering technique used in his paintings is a reflection of this thought process.
This show marks Mannig’s first solo exhibition not only in Japan but also outside of Europe. It features new works comprising of paintings, drawings and installations. In addition to his oeuvre from the world of German fairytales, he has also completed a series of works inspired by American late-night TV shows and all-night screenings of B-rate horror films from the 70’s.
Asked about the show, Mannig commented:
"Mitternachtsbilder (Midnight Picture). In this title, there is a possibility of a Romantic and poetic interpretation. It can refer to the traditional figure of the German storyteller of fairytales such as Brothers Grimm. The title is also a play on the phenomenon of American Midnight Movies of the 70's. They typically featured a mixture of low-budget, independently produced horror, anime, western, fairytale, erotic & porno films shown late at night. It represented an opposition to the traditional depiction of normal life and order in mainstream film. These paintings are from the “Twilight Zone” of Midnight Movies where the Bizarre may turn out to be the Best and the Grotesque changes into the Good. And now, the Unbelievable is coming to the Land of the Rising Sun!

マーティン・マニグ個展 「Mitternachtsbilder (ミッドナイト・ピクチャーズ)」

この度NANZUKA UNDERGROUNDは、ドイツ人の若手ペインター、マーティン・マニグによる新作個展を開催いたします。
マーティン・マニグは、1974年フライブルグに生まれ、ドレスデン美術大学を卒業し、同大学の教授で著名アーティストであるラルフ・ケルバッハの基で修士号を取得したアーティストです。ドイツの伝統的な風刺物語から現代のサブカルチャーまで、さまざまな要素からイメージソースを得て描かれるその作品は、ペインティングという表現行為の自由さと、その決して色あせる事の無い魅力を生き生きと表しています。一見ウィットに富み、親しみやすいマニグの作品の背景には、常に人間の醜い歴史を反省し、その存在意義を問いただそうとするアーティストのまなざしがあります。マニグのペインティングが、何層ものレイヤーを重ねて描かれる理由は、そうした彼の思考を表現しているからです。
今回、日本及びアジア圏において初となる個展において、マニグは新作のペインティングやドローイングを展示する予定です。マニグは、今回の個展のテーマに、得意とするドイツ伝統のおとぎ話的世界観に加え、深夜時間帯のTVやオールナイトシネマで上映されるB級ホラー映画にインスピレーションを得た作品を制作しました。
本展に向けて、マニグは下記のようにコメントしています。 「あなたは、この展覧会のタイトルから、ロマンティックで詩的なイメージを浮かべるかもしれません。あるいは、同時に、古くからドイツで言い伝えられている、グリム童話のようなお伽話をイメージするかもしれません。しかし、私は今回の作品において、70年代にアメリカで制作されたオールナイト映画（深夜の映画館で上映された、低予算で作られた、ホラー・アニメ・西部劇・おとぎ話・エロティック・ポルノ、などが混ざり合った自主制作映画）に注目し、そのテイストを取り入れました。これらの映画は、平凡で順風満帆な“ノーマル・ライフ”の対局の仮想現実として作られたものです。私は、そうした仮想のイメージを基に、現実世界と想像世界の間に、自分の居場所を作っています。今回の展覧会におけるペインティング作品は、TVドラマシリーズ「The Twilight Zone」を基に制作されました。あの奇怪なものが最高のものに、グロテスクなものが善となる世界です。あなたの想像を超えたことが、日出ずる国に起こるのです！グッド・バイ・アンド・アーメン。」（あなたのマーティン・マニグより。）
